Our Memorial day weekend started out like this:
And ended like this:
We went out to eat on Friday night to eat some dinner, and afterwards Wilson was running through the parking lot and got his leg twisted in a crack in the pavement. When we put him in his carseat he was screaming, but we just thought he had a twisted ankle. Being the wonderful parents we are (really me) we just told him to buck up and stop crying. It wasn't until we got home and he wouldn't move from laying in Ryan's lap, that we finally took his pants off and Bob noticed that there was a HUGE bump on his left thigh.
That's when we decided a trip to Instacare was in order. Ryan packed him up and drove away. Twenty minutes later I get a phone call saying he broke his femur and they were sending him to Primary Children's. Ryan said he was very proud of Wilson, because even though he was hurting he was still very polite to the nurses and Doctors. I met them up at Primaries only to learn that they wouldn't take him to reset his leg and cast him until the next morning because a femur break wasn't life threatening. The advantage of having Ryan be Wilson's favorite is that I didn't have to stay the night in the hospital with him... Ryan said he was very cute though. During the night he wanted Ryan to sleep in the bed with him and hold his hand. He'd shift occasionally and whimper because it hurt him, but then say "I okay, Dad," and "go to sleep, Dad." They took him in to the OR at eight on saturday and reseting and casting it took about an hour. When we went into recovery he was sleeping and pretty much slept the rest of the day.
They wouldn't release him until he had eaten and kept it down, so we waited. And waited. And waited. The kid was exhausted and slept a long time. Finally he woke up and ate his grilled cheese and watermelon. Kept it all down, and then we waited some more for the special SPICA cast carseat guy to get there. Finally we left around five pm. So he'll be in this wonderful cast for five weeks. He can't move. It covers his entire left leg, half of the right, and goes all the way up to his armpits. Poor guy is getting frustrated that all he can do is lay around. He's been watching a lot of TV, playing a lot of games on the iPad, and taking daily walks in the wagon.
Here is a picture of the x-ray. Notice the little piece of bone on the lower half of his femur that has broken off like a splinter?
